Welcome to 2006!

So, another year has passed by and I'm sitting in front of the TV in my sweat pants waiting for 2005 to come to an end. (Quite sad isn't it?)

Hopefully you are having more of an eventful holiday than I am. I just thought I would scribble a little here and wish everyone a very Happy New Year. Wishing you all the very best and success in the coming year.

Best Wishes!

No More Fun and Games.

It's time to get down to business. So my 3B term is coming to an end, with one more final exam to go. With my 4th year classes starting, I am now going to have to start applying for full-time jobs at different companies. Oh what great fun!

Looks like the days of fun and games are over now. Things seem to be taking a turn towards more serious matters. Questions that pop in my mind these days are: Where am I going to look for a full time position? Where am I going to live? Which jobs will give me the best opportunities in the future? Will I even be able to get a job?!?!

Not fun! I've heard many stories of people who could not find jobs after the completion of their undergrad degree. Hopefully I'll have better luck than them. Being an international student, I seem to be getting very pessimistic about my chances of landing a decent job here in Canada. Maybe I just need to look around a little more and research to see what my best options are.

That's all for today, I need a break from school and work. So I think I am going to simply stay at home and spend some alone time over the Winter break to sort things out. Bye now.

Best Wishes.

Memories of Orientation Week 2005

So, I was an Orientation Leader for Village 1 East 5 for this year's frosh week and finally I've received some pictures from frosh week that I can post here on the blog.

The week started of with move-in day when we got to help all the first-year students move into residence. As you can imagine, it didn't take long for the day to get extremely tiring. I got to hang out near the house that I was assigned to - Village 1 East 5. The first picture here is of all the residents of East 5, including the Don - Brad (the dude on the ground wearing a black t-shirt). Brad was an awesome guy, his residents are lucky to have him. The first day I got to hang out with him and we figured out what the agenda was like for the rest of orientation week. He was very helpful whenever possible with all the events that took place, it was great getting to meet him.

Overall, Orientation week was a great experience. I got the chance to work with some amazing people, specially all the other leaders that were in my region. They are all loads of fun to hang out with and extremely friendly. There is never a dull moment when you are with these people, they seem to have all these wierd traditions and games that seem wierd at first, but when approached with an open-mind, they actually lots of fun! The picture on the right here is of all the leaders that were in charge of the East region of residences. All us leaders were in our formal gear and looking quite dashing. What can I say, we were definitely a good looking bunch.

Some of the events that were planned for the first-years were Black & Gold Day (when we took the newcomers to watch our football team play againts University of Toronto) and The Carnival (when everyone spent the day outside enjoying different carnival activities and a free barbeque). The picture here on the left is with the residents of East 5 before the football game. Look at how hyped up everyone is! This group was awesome, they all got along extremely well, and were very enthusiastic throughout the whole week. I'm really glad to have had to gotten to know them.

The picture here on the right is that from the carnival of people from different regions play tug-of-war. It was great fun! East actually won the tug-of-war event. You can see how hard we were all trying from the expressions on our faces. If only I was putting in this much effort whenever I have to study! Then you can also see Brad there in the pic, him along with everyone else was putting in a 110%. Good job boys and girls, you all have made East very proud (and strong)!

Finally, as the week was approacing to an end, there was the Monte Carlo Night (a.k.a Casino Night) and ofcourse the famous Waterloo Toga Party! I couldn't find any decent pictures from the toga party, but here's a picture of me with a few of my residents at Monte Carlo Night.

So that's the what happened during Orientation week. It was loads of fun and a great experience. But sometimes I feel bad for all the first-years. They all come in so enthusiastic and excited, and then once school starts, they realize that life is not as easy as they knew it to be. Some have never lived on their own, some are from different countries, and some are simply clueless as to what to expect. It's quite the shock. But we all survive some how.

Thats enough for now, I've got to get back to my last assignment of the term - concurrency - which is due in 2 days.

Cheers!

End of 3rd Year!

Wow! I find it quite hard to believe that I'm still alive and about to finish my 3rd year here at UW. Today, I finally came to realize that my final exams are starting in 10 days! This was quite the shock. I haven't started studying for finals yet and I have 3 CS assignments due before exams start. Things are getting quite hectic now.

The last 3 years seem like a blur. I can't seem to grasp where they went. It only seems like I've grown more tired and worn out, but I cant recall how and why it all happened? I guess things just go by when you are busy.

With work piling up, I seem to have found a new love for my guitar/music. I've been listening to many new songs and also playing my guitar (maybe just a tad too much). I'm just praying that I don't fail anything this term. Hopefully you will be praying for me too.

Take Care.

The Days go by...

Well, feeling a little under the weather today. I seem to have managed to wear myself out. For the last couple of weeks, I'd been working like a maniac trying to keep up with school work, but not matter how much I worked, there always seemed to be more work piling up.

I have my CS454 Distributed Systems Middleware program to finish before Wednesday. It's going well so far. Tamim bhai and I have been working on it for almost two weeks now. Tamim bhai has been extremely helpful with the project, he's been explaining a lot of things to me regarding this type of software and also teaching me new programming techniques. I really appreciate his efforts.

We also have a CS360 assignment due on Thursday. Having missed the last three lectures, now I have to read the course material on my own and then make an attempt at the assignment. There's a lot of reading that I need to finish before I can make an attempt to solving the problems, but oh well, it has to be done sometime.

My last midterm is also around the corner. I have my Chemistry midterm on Friday. I've also missed the last 4 lectures for that class...so it's the same story...more readings and catching up!!!

The days seem to be flying by now. It's amazing how quickly time flies when you are kept busy. Usually I complain about how there is too much work assigned to us in Computer Science and what not, but I've also come to realize, that I'm learning some good work ethics which will definitely come in handy in the future.

Now, that's all for today, I should get back to some work. Hope you (yes, you the reader) are doing well and enjoying life.

Best Wishes.

Pictures

Well, Eid was celebrated on Thursday November 3rd this year here in Waterloo. I just so happened to have an assignment due and also a midterm on that day. So my day was quite "eventful".

Most of my day was spent in the Mathematics & Computer Science building preparing for the exam. My friend happened to have his new camera-phone with him, so he snapped a few shots of me stressing over work during Eid. The following are links that will take you to the pictures:

Eid Mubarak!

The month of Ramadan is coming to an end. Time to celebrate Eid! In the last two years, I haven't had the chance to celebrate Eid, usually because of assignments and midterms. Looks like this year won't be any different. Depending on the moon sighting, Eid ul-Fitr might be tomorrow, if that's the case, then I will be celebrating Eid along with my CS360 midterm. Otherwise, on Friday, I will be celebrating this holy day while working on my Concurrency and Distributed Systems projects. Isn't the life of a University of Waterloo Computer Science student just absolutely wonderful???

I was reminiscing about the days when I would celebrate Eid in Bangladesh. Those were the good old days. You'd receive presents from your elders (cash - if you're lucky), buy new clothes, and of course have a day to simply feast on some amazing food! Those days seem so far away now. I've been secluded from my home for too long. Oh, what wouldn't I be willing to give up to go back home for one day!

Well, I shouldn't really be complaining. I know that not many people get the opportunities that I've had in my lifetime and I am definitely thankful for that. Just that I'm a little homesick after a long time. But as always, the homesickness will pass, and I'll move on.

Best Wishes, and Eid Mubarak!

A Breath of Fresh Air

I woke up today to the song Doesn't Remind Me by Audioslave. I'd heard the song many times before, but today, the song seemed to have a different meaning. This being the peak midterm season, I've been quite overwhelmed with studies. The song reminded me, that we all need to take some time and clear our minds by doing something that simply doesn't remind us of anything.

"I like playing in the sand, what's mine is ours, 'cause it doesn't remind me of anything."

After getting really frustrated with midterms last night, I decided to go for a walk around 4:00 am. Although it was extremely cold and windy, I found it to be quite pleasing. The street lights were at a full glow, yet everyone else seemed to have left me behind. I had never seen this side of Waterloo before.

There is only a year left before I graduate, and I'll have to move away from here soon. All my life I have been migrating from one place to another almost on a yearly basis. Two years in this city is by far the longest that I've stayed put. I think I'm starting to get quite attached to this place. But nothing is forever, and I guess I'll just have to wait and see where the currents take me next.

Cheers!
